In this latest edition of Bungalux (the Kentucky Derby edition!), I am introducing my Ladies of Lux series, which showcases groundbreaking women whom I personally admire. Andrea Knowles, principal of Equine Residences™️, is one of the world’s leading experts in equestrian design. After two decades in the residential world of interiors at Knowles Design, Andrea founded ER with the belief that horse venues, be they private, for sales or for competitions, should feel as much a home for horse and human as the ones where people lay their heads. Bringing comfort, style, wellness and artistry to the barn is a complex knowledge base, and as a lifelong “horse girl,” Andrea Knowles and Equine Residences have quickly dominated the niche of facility design.
Here's Andrea to talk about her favorite horse properties on the market, equestrian architecture, and much more!
Horse properties, or as we call them and named our business, Equine Residences, are not exactly a couple of poles, beams and a metal roof as some might expect. And we at ER daily scour the worlds of equestrian and residential architecture & interior design to find the most exceptional stables for inspiration for our own work, as well as our daily posts on Instagram.
One thing many of the barns (or yards as they’re referred to overseas) have in common is exceptional architecture. Tom Ford’s ranch Cerro Pelon is a wonderful example of world class stable design. Located on 20,662 acres outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the ranch was designed by world famous Pritzker award winning architect Tadao Ando and is absolutely stunning in its subtlety, use of the land and nature as inspiration, and its functionality as a horse stable. This property sold in 2022 for an unknown price after asking $72,000,000.00.
Harkening back to the Gilded Age, we find Llangolen Farm in Upperville, VA in prime hunt country. Originally built on 10,000 acres in the mid 18th century, it was renovated into its current form as a grand racing yard and stud farm by John Hay “Jock” Whitney and his wife Liz. Thirty-five years ago it was again renovated to its current state and includes polo fields, as well as a racing track. Llangolen is on the market for $27,500,000.00. And we can’t not acknowledge Willow Creek Estancia in Rancho Santa Fe, CA which was designed by beloved California architect Marc Appleton Associates. Currently on the market for $98,500,000.00, the house, stables, trails and extraordinary facilities are on 77 acres and the main residence is classic Appleton.
Our honorable mention goes to Wellington, Florida, America’s capital of the horse world and a place where we at Equine Residences are partly based, as there is constant building and renovating of horse properties in town. With a three month-plus season of competition at WEF (the Palm Beach International Winter Equestrian Festival, now owned by German juggernaut Global Equestrian Group), the area is growing exponentially while still keeping within its small-town borders.
Aside from the three properties mentioned above, please take a look at these other currently available listings, as well as Equine Residences’ Instagram and website. Also please see Equine Residences’ feature in March’s issue of The Plaid Horse Magazine.
